How to Care for Handmade Toys

Caring for handmade toys1

It survived kids’ games, dogs, and sofa falls, but can it survive your TLC? Free tip: never wash the toy’s head separate from the body.

Amigurumi are not just toys, they are small works of art created with love and patience. Each loop, each stitch carries a piece of the soul of the master. To ensure these cute creatures bring you joy for many years, they require special care. In this article, we will cover the basic rules that will help keep your knitted friends in perfect condition.

Materials Matter: Choosing the Right Approach
The first thing to consider when caring for amigurumi is the materials they are made from. The most commonly used include:

  • Cotton: Durable, hypoallergenic, holds its shape well. Easy to wash but may fade slightly during the first few washes.
  • Acrylic: Soft, bright, affordable. May pill over time and is less breathable than cotton.
  • Wool/Blend: Warm, pleasant to the touch. Requires more delicate care and may shrink if washed incorrectly.
  • Lurex/Sparkle Yarn: Beautiful but may be less durable and require special attention when washing.

Important: If you purchased the toy from an artisan, be sure to save or ask for information about the yarn composition. Artisans should also take note: create and keep tags for your work indicating the yarn and care instructions. This is your mark of quality and care for the customer.

Washing: Delicacy is Everything
Washing is the most critical step in caring for amigurumi. Remember the golden rule: the gentler, the better!

  • Hand washing is ideal:
  • Use cool or lukewarm water (no higher than 30°C)
  • Use mild detergents designed for delicate fabrics or baby items
  • Gently soak the toy for 10-15 minutes
  • Wash with gentle squeezing motions
  • Rinse thoroughly in clean, cool water
  • [Machine washing (only as a last resort)]:
  • Delicate cycle at no higher than 30°C
  • Be sure to use a laundry bag
  • Use liquid detergent
  • Never use the spin cycle

Drying: Maintaining Shape and Avoiding Deformation
Proper drying is key to ensuring your amigurumi doesn’t lose its shape or stretch.

  • Never use a machine dryer!: High temperatures and drum rotation can irreparably damage the toy.
  • Gently squeeze out excess water: Do not wring! Lightly press with your hands or wrap in a terry towel.
  • Dry flat: Place the toy on a dry towel on a flat surface.
  • Avoid direct sunlight and heat sources: Sun can fade the yarn and heaters can cause deformation.
  • Turn the toy over periodically: This ensures even drying.

Stain Removal: Spot Treatment
If the toy isn’t very dirty but has a small stain, you can avoid a full wash.

  • Use a damp cloth or soft sponge with mild detergent
  • Gently blot the stain without rubbing
  • Wipe with a clean, damp cloth to remove detergent residue
  • Allow the toy to air dry naturally

Detail Care: Eyes, Noses, etc.
Amigurumi are often decorated with plastic eyes, noses, buttons, or embroidery.

  • Plastic parts: Usually not damaged by washing but can scratch with rough handling
  • Embroidery: If the toy has embroidered elements, be extra careful when washing
  • Filling: Typically synthetic fiber or hollow fiber. Doesn’t lose properties with proper washing and drying

Storage: Handle with Care
Proper storage helps maintain the appearance of your knitted friends.

  • Avoid damp areas to prevent mold
  • Don’t store in plastic bags – toys need air circulation
  • Best stored in a dry, ventilated place
  • Use fabric bags or baskets
  • Avoid prolonged direct sunlight

Regular Care: Prevention is Better Than Cure
Periodically inspect the toy: Check for pilling and loose threads.

  • Removing pilling: If pilling appears, carefully remove with a special machine or sharp scissors
  • Interesting fact: Pilling occurs more on synthetic and blend yarns due to their higher strength
  • Tightening threads: If you notice a loose thread, gently pull it and secure it from the inside

Important: By following these simple rules, you can preserve the warmth, tenderness, and charm of your favorite amigurumi for many years. Remember that every toy made with love deserves careful handling!
